What you’ll learn in the ski touring course

This beginner ski touring course in Slovenia is designed to give you both knowledge and hands-on practice. Together with our guides, you’ll cover:

  • Avalanche safety and rescue basics – learn to use a beacon, probe, and shovel.
  • Navigation and terrain assessment – how to read a map, plan a safe route, and make smart decisions in the mountains.
  • Equipment use – from touring skis and skins to avalanche gear.

Instruction about the spot where the course will be taking place will be comunicated with you via mail in advance. Ski mountaineering courses are performed outside on the terrain, starting around 9.00 in the morning (exact information will be provided individualy) The instructor presnet the basics about the equipments used for ski mountaineering and the worshops follows. The duration of the course is up to 6 hours.
Day 01

Ski touring course

Equipment Lecture:

  • Introduction to basic ski touring gear, including crampons, ice axes, and avalanche safety equipment.
  • Presentation of various types and correct usage of winter tools.

Field Exercises:

  • practical exercises on walking with skis uphill and using skins and crampons.
  • ski techniques in different types of snow
  • learning to assess the stability of the snowpack and implementing safety measures.

Avalanche Safety:

  • Theoretical lecture on the formation of avalanches and safety measures.
  • Practical exercises using avalanche safety equipment and simulating rescue scenarios.

Ski Touring Basics:

  • Discussion on the fundamentals of alpinism and adapting knowledge for winter conditions.
  • Explanation of different skiing techniques and overcoming challenges in ski touring.

Debriefing and Feedback:

  • Analysis of performed exercises and situations.
  • Providing individual feedback for further improvements.

CONDITIONS

No need for previous basic mountain snow experiences.

Necessary gear:

  • Comfortable winter sports clothes (3 layers of clothing)
  • Insulation and windproof jackets
  • Waterproof gloves + one extra pair
  • Headwear (cap, buff)
  • Ski mountaineering boots for automatic, semi-automatic
  • Snacks
  • Insulated bottle for a warm tea (1L)
  • Sunscreen, suncream, toothbrush
  • ID Card, cash for food and accommodation

Necessary technical gear:

  • Crampons suitable for your boots
  • 1 x ice axe
  • Helmet
  • Avalanche safety gear (probe, shelve, and beacon)
  • ski touring skis + skins
  • ski poles

In case you don’t have your technical gear, we provide it to you. Prior arrangement is necessary.
